I’ve personally reviewed the best nontoxic pots and pans on the market — these are my favorite PFAS-free options that are safe, easy to clean, durable, and make mealtime delicious.

When it comes to stocking our kitchens, we believe that sustainability starts with using what we already have — repairing it when possible, and keeping it until it’s truly worn out or no longer serving our needs. But when it’s finally time to replace that scratched-up pan or warped pot, we try to make the most conscious effort possible to find a long-lasting, eco-friendly upgrade. Enter nontoxic cookware: A healthier, safer, and more sustainable choice for you and the planet. After all, what we cook with, like our pots, pans, and cooking utensils, is just as important as what we cook. That’s why I put the most popular nontoxic cookware brands to the test — to help you find the best options that truly perform, look beautiful, and support a greener kitchen in 2025 and beyond.

What’s the issue with conventional cookware?

If you’re anything like us, you might be noticing the wear and tear on some of your most-used cookware. No big deal, right? Well… if it’s that nonstick coating starting to peel off inside your pan, it actually might be a big deal — and worth replacing sooner rather than later. Most conventional nonstick coatings are made from so-called “forever chemicals,” more formally known as PFAS (pronounced PEE-fas).

Two of the most common members of this chemical family are PFOA and PFOS. These per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances aren’t just used in cookware; they show up in everything from pizza boxes and period underwear to moisture-wicking activewear. You might know them best under one of their most famous brand names: Teflon.

According to the American Cancer Society, the PFOA used in the process of making Teflon has raised concerns about its potential to cause cancer. Beyond that, studies suggest PFOA exposure can impact immune system function and even affect fertility in humans. So while that flaking pan might look like a minor inconvenience, it could actually be leaching harmful chemicals into your food and your home. That’s why switching to nontoxic, PFAS-free cookware is such an important and empowering upgrade — for both your health and the health of the planet.

What materials should you look for in nontoxic cookware?

When it comes to choosing nontoxic cookware, the materials you pick are just as important as the recipes you create. Look for options like stainless steel, which is durable, non-reactive, and perfect for everything from searing veggies to simmering sauces. Cast iron is another classic favorite — naturally nonstick when properly seasoned, it’s incredibly long-lasting and even adds a bit of iron to your food. Enameled cast iron offers the same heat-retention benefits but with an easy-to-clean, non-reactive coating. 100% ceramic cookware is a fantastic choice, too, since it’s free from heavy metals and synthetic coatings and offers excellent nonstick performance without the harmful chemicals. Glass and carbon steel are also safe, versatile options depending on your cooking style. By choosing these safer, time-tested materials, you’re creating a kitchen that supports your health while helping you cook up beautiful meals for years to come.

What are the relevant certifications?

When shopping for nontoxic cookware, certifications can help you cut through the marketing noise and feel confident about what you’re bringing into your kitchen. Here what you should look out for:

  • Prop 65 compliant: Cookware that’s compliant meets California’s stringent safety standards for heavy metals and toxic substances.
  • FDA approved: This label indicates that materials used in the cookware are deemed safe for food contact.
  • Lead- and cadmium-free: This is important for ceramic and enameled cookware to ensure no heavy metal leaching.
  • PFAS-, PFOA-, and PTFE-free: This label guarantees the cookware is free from harmful “forever chemicals” commonly found in nonstick coatings.
  • Third-party lab testing: Some cookware brands provide independent lab results to verify safety and nontoxic claims.

Our methodology & criteria:

For this guide, I’ve rounded up my favorite nontoxic and eco-friendly cookware and personally tested out some of their best-selling products to find out how they compare with their conventional counterparts. Below, I’ve included notes on how it was to cook with each brand’s wares, how they wore over time, and other details that delighted me. (Spoiler alert: I am obsessed with these goods!) All of the brands on this list meet the following criteria.

  • NONTOXIC/PFAS-FREE | All of the pots and pans on this list are free of unsafe chemical coatings and finishes. We’ve opted for tried and true materials like cast iron and stainless steel, as well as newer options that are guaranteed to be safe.
  • PERFORMS IN THE KITCHEN | I tested each piece of cookware for a variety of meals. Every option on this list produces something delicious.
  • EASY TO CLEAN | We’ve prioritized options that are still easy to clean, even without the nonstick coating.

Nontoxic Materials | Pure ceramic
Product Range | Cookware, bakeware, teaware, kitchen accessories
Price Range | $76 – $2,636

Xtrema is one of the only brands on the market making cookware that is 100% ceramic. So if you’ve ever cooked on a ceramic-coated pan, you are familiar with the heat-retaining, smooth, non-stick surface (a dream to cook on, and a cinch to clean!). Completely metal-free, these pieces are environmentally friendly, handcrafted by Chinese artisans, and totally safe for almost every heat source imaginable, from your oven to the microwave to the campfire. Not only is the material beautiful and sleek, it is also stain- and scratch-resistant, and surprisingly durable. But the brand is so confident in its product that it not only has a 10-year warranty but also a lifetime replacement program. We love the confidence!

My Review | These are the most unique-looking pieces in my collection; I almost can’t believe they are for cooking! The black surface seems impervious to the food we cooked in it — we made a sticky rice dish and a thick curry, and the pots were nearly spotless just after serving, before we’d even given them a rinse! I love how easily they go from the stove to the tabletop — they are beautiful serving dishes! The versa pan looks almost identical to my slow cooker insert, and the signature skillet has a comfortable shape with a wide handle that makes it easy to move around as needed (just remember to cover the handle while cooking so you don’t burn yourself!).

2.  Greenpan

Plant trees
Recycled materials

Best For | Easy-to-clean cookware
Nontoxic Materials | Hard anodized aluminum, ceramic coating
Product Range | Cookware, bakeware, electrics, cutlery & tools
Price Range | $29 – $2,095

Greenpan is one of the most highly rated and award-winning nontoxic cookware brands out there, racking up accolades from Good Housekeeping and America’s Test Kitchen to Oprah and Stanley Tucci (who has his own collection with the brand!). At the forefront of the sustainable cookware game, Greenpan was launched in 2007 specifically to offer a safer alternative to traditional nonstick cookware and its harmful coating. That’s right — while PFAS and forever chemicals only entered the mainstream conversation a few years ago, Greenpan has been making Teflon- and plastic-coating-free cookware for almost 20 years! Their innovative nonstick material, Thermolon™, is actually derived from sand. In addition to their impressive sustainability practices, their cookware is simply excellent: Well-designed, made to last, and compatible with all cooktops (even induction!).

My Review | I got the Valencia Pro ceramic nonstick 10″ pan with a lid, which was shipped in an FSC certified recyclable box. Oven safe up to 600 degrees, tested out my oven pizza recipe that I usually make in a cast iron, and I’m hooked. Made from a hard anodized recycled aluminum, this extremely durable pan is much lighter weight than my cast iron, and so much easier to clean! While it’s technically dishwasher safe, handwashing will prolong the life of the ceramic coating, and since food just slips off with a quick swipe, that feels like an extra step worth taking!

My Review | If your favorite version of sustainable is synonymous with “heirloom,” the Made In Dutch Oven is the pot for you (and generations to come!). This gorgeous gal is made from the world’s finest enameled cast iron in Northern France, which has made a name for itself in the professional kitchen world since the 1920s. With the perfect ratio of cast iron to enamel, this pot holds heat evenly and is an absolute cinch to clean just with soap and water. The lid is designed with tiny dimples that help to collect steam and return the moisture to the food as it cooks (and the knobs are customizable!). I am obsessed with the Antique White color I chose, which looks elegant and timeless while letting the food inside it take the spotlight.

4. Quince

Budget friendly
Eco friendly packaging
Warranty offered

Best For | Budget-friendly luxury cookware
Nontoxic Materials | Stainless steel, aluminum
Product Range | Kitchenware, cookware, tabletop, appliances
Price Range | $45 – $300

Is it possible to find Italian cookware at professional-grade standards and an affordable price point? Quince says yes! The brand took what they do best — making luxury items at lower costs — and put out a timeless collection of timeless kitchen staples for every kitchen. 5-ply aluminum and stainless steel give these pots and pans a lightweight but durable body that heats up quickly and evenly. The non-toxic cooking surface is PFA, PFOA, PTFE, BPA, lead, and cadmium free (as it should be!) with ergonomic handles designed to stay cool to the touch. Made in Italy at a facility using renewable energy sources and recyclable materials, these pieces are a steal at around 35% off their traditional retail counterparts.

My Review | When I pulled my new 5-ply stainless steel 8-qt stockpot from the shipping box, I felt like my potluck game could finally level up. This beauty is an absolute workhorse, perfect for large recipes of chili, family-size pastas, and mini-crawfish boils. I was bummed I didn’t have it earlier in the summer when our neighbors offloaded several pounds of plums from their backyard tree — it would have been perfect for making a year’s supply of jam! The frying pan has already gotten quite the workout on my husband’s cooking nights, and he’s a huge fan of the handle design, which stays relatively cool to the touch so he doesn’t scorch himself.

5. Great Jones

Budget friendly
Eco friendly packaging
Natural materials
Small business
Warranty offered
Woman owned

Best For | Instagram-worthy cast iron
Nontoxic Materials | Nonstick ceramic coating (no Teflon!)
Product Range | Pots & pans, sets, bakeware, sides & accessories
Price Range | $45 – $370

Great Jones was started by two best friends who wanted to offer modern, heirloom-quality cookware that nodded to female chefs and food writers alike. With all the buzz about the brand, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on this colorful collection! If you’re notorious for burning the casserole (us too!), the Dutch oven cooks evenly and makes feeding our friends and family a breeze. Better yet, all the cookware is crafted with nontoxic materials like stainless steel, ceramic, and cast iron. The company’s interactive website, helpful resources, and bold aesthetic help shopping for cookware feel less intimidating.

My Review | The Dutchess is the big, beautiful workhorse I’ve been looking for: A 6.75 quart enameled cast iron Dutch oven that I know will last me decades. Everything about this pot is a dream, from the color (a matte, royal blue called “Blueberry”) to the oblong shape that will definitely fit a large roasting bird. I feel like it’s weirdly challenging to find an oval Dutch oven of this size without it weighing an absolute ton and costing a small fortune, but this pot manages to be both substantial and easy to maneuver and retails for just $160. It’s the perfect pot for my family’s favorite chicken and olives with saffron rice, making the weeknight meal feel festive and elevated when served from this gorgeous pot. I can’t wait to try the Thanksgiving turkey in it this year!

We also reviewed the bestselling Fry Family pans, and let me just say: These babies live up to the promise of nontoxic nonstick. They are made with a ceramic coating that’s healthy for both you and planet Earth, and you can even put them in the oven!

6. Material

Handcrafted

Best For | Minimalist essentials
Nontoxic Materials | Copper, stainless steel alloy coating
Product Range | Cookware, dinner, glassware
Price Range | $120

If your dream kitchen is a fewer-better vibe, let us introduce you to your new favorite brand: Material specializes in crafting kitchenware that is not only versatile and well-made, but also beautiful. Prioritizing good design means using only the best materials, sourced from ethical manufacturers that never use toxic chemicals or harmful coatings. The brand uses a copper core in all of its cookware, which is ideal for cooking with its ability to heat quickly and evenly, while the 5-ply construction protects the pots from scorching or warping. Their nonstick pan has a stainless steel alloy coating made without lead, cadmium, or PFOAs. Their sauce pot has a convenient spout and sleek measuring markers to streamline the cooking process. These thoughtful design details and professional-grade materials are also affordable — especially knowing the brand offers repairs and replacements to help these pieces last for years!

My Review | I tried the sauce pot and the coated pan, and from the moment I pulled them out of their shipping boxes I was in love. The copper cores give these pieces a solid, satisfying heft in the hand without being unwieldy (and I love the little copper details peeking out of the brand stamp on the bottom and the edges of the sauce pot!). Cleaning was a breeze, and the sauce pot is even dishwasher-safe! I especially love the pouring spout and the measuring marks on the inside of the sauce pot, eliminating the need for dirtying an extra measuring cup. The lid is also designed to easily let out steam, reducing the boil-over spills I’m particularly famous for in my house. I picked the new “sky” color for my nonstick pan, and it’s a gorgeous bluish-gray that looks almost lavender in some lights.

7. Lodge

American made
Gives back
Warranty offered

Best For | Naturally nontoxic cast iron
Nontoxic Materials | Seasoned cast iron, enameled cast iron, seasoned carbon steel
Product Range | Cookware, bakeware, grilling, outdoor
Price Range | $18 – $200

Lodge has been crafting heirloom-quality cast iron cookware in South Pittsburg, Tennessee since 1896, making it one of the most trusted names in American kitchens. Every piece is made from just iron and vegetable oil, so it’s naturally non-toxic — no synthetic coatings, no PFAS, PFOA, PTFE, or any harmful chemicals. Instead, each pan comes pre-seasoned with 100% natural vegetable oil, giving it a natural, easy-release finish that improves with every use.

Lodge’s cast iron is beloved for its unbeatable heat retention and even heating, making it perfect for searing, baking, sautéing, frying, and more — whether you’re cooking on the stove, in the oven, on the grill, or even over a campfire. 8. Caraway

Budget friendly
Eco friendly packaging
Fair trade
Recycled materials
Warranty offered

Best For | Design meets performance
Nontoxic Materials | Ethically made & recyclable ceramic cookware
Product Range | Pans, Dutch ovens, sets, bakeware, accessories, & linens
Price Range | $85 – $1,870

The hype is, in fact, real when it comes to Caraway! This cookware and bakeware brand uses only ceramic and a mineral coating for its goods. Not only that but pieces are ethically made and sent in eco-friendly packaging — and they’re recyclable, too. If you can, we recommend grabbing a set for a generous discount!

My Review | I am obsessed with my 10.5″ ceramic fry pan and 6.5-quart Dutch oven. Not only are these timeless, classic designs (I got them in navy), but cooking with them is easy. The nonstick ceramic coating only requires the tiniest bit of oil or butter to let food easily slide across the surface (but the brand warns against cooking sprays, which can age the surface of the pan faster). And cleaning is a total breeze, since pretty much nothing stuck to the surface of the ceramic. One of the best parts of their design is the lids: Completely flat, both the lids and the bodies of the pans slip neatly into storage slots on their sides. Plus the lids have an ingenious tiny steam hole to prevent bubbling annoying messes from unwatched pots bubbling over (just me??) without being so substantially sized as to risk giving the cook a steam burn.

9. Our Place

BIPOC Owned
Budget friendly
Recycled materials
Warranty offered
Woman owned

Best For | Space-saavy all-in-one cookware
Nontoxic Materials | Ceramic nonstick coating, recycled glass, natural sand, natural dyes
Product Range | Cups, plates, bowls, multifunctional pans & pots
Price Range | $45 – $585

Our Place‘s minimalist cookware does it all. The Always Pan, for example, comes in ten soothing earth tones and includes a spatula and a steaming basket for all-in-one cooking. We love how the pan looks on our stovetop but beware of cooking at too high temperatures or the nonstick coating will begin to peel. Best of all, this cookware is ethically made with responsible materials, and it’s Teflon-, PFOA-, and PTFE-free. Based in Los Angeles, the brand also partners with organizations combatting food insecurity.

My Review | The Always Pan is an all-in-one piece that is perfect for my particular brand of kitchen laziness: It’s a nonstick frying pan that I can also use to boil a toddler-sized serving of pasta in the blink of an eye, using the included steam basket as a colander. It also comes with a lid and a wooden spoon that has its own designated resting spot on the pot’s handle, so I find myself reaching for it again and again, whether I’m making eggs, sauce, or yet another batch of macaroni. The Perfect Pot is aptly named, and an easy go-to when I need to accommodate more volume. With an aluminum body, this pot is light enough that I can lift it with one hand! Both pots have pour spouts, making it super easy to transfer liquid without dirtying more dishes. Perfect for the minimalist or starter kitchen, there’s also no compromising on aesthetics with these pieces — the Blue Salt color we chose is timeless and soothing and looks as great on the counter as it does in the dish rack.

10. Milo by Kana

Recycled materials
Small business
Warranty offered

Best For | Accessibly-priced enameled cast iron
Nontoxic Materials | Partially recycled cast iron
Product Range | Dutch ovens, skillets, sets, accessories
Price Range | $39 – $339

Milo by Kana’s heritage-inspired cookware is made from enameled cast iron, which is naturally non-stick. The brand’s kitchen products are created to last with a lifetime warranty and are fully free from toxic chemicals. We especially love the mini Dutch oven, for slow cooking and all kinds of comfort foods.

My Review | Enameled cast iron lovers rejoice: This is the ultimate pairing for all of your favorite things about cast iron without any of the fussy care of re-seasoning. In fact, you can pop these babies in the dishwasher! If that makes you skeptical as it did my husband, you can rest assured that the brand is so confident in their product, they’ve backed it with a lifetime warranty. The lid fits both the Dutch oven and the skillet, and we enjoyed making everything from eggs to bread to pork chops perfectly, absolutely loving the easy cleanup.
