Our editors have snoozed in sustainable sleepwear for years — these are our favorite bamboo options that are soft, breathable, eco-friendly, and size-inclusive, too.

For years, our editors have been committed to finding (and testing) the most sustainable fabrics out there to see how they fit into their everyday lives. For example, totally natural fabrics like cotton and linen are ideal for summertime dressing because of their superior crispness and breathability. Responsible synthetics like recycled nylon and TENCEL are unbeatable for sweaty workouts because they stretch well and dry quickly.

And for pajamas, lately we’ve been obsessed with bamboo for the soft, cozy, durable — and sustainable — loungewear it makes. 🎍

Why should you consider bamboo pajamas?

When bamboo is processed and spun into fabric, it becomes a type of viscose or rayon — meaning it behaves like a synthetic fabric, feeling ultra-soft to the touch and effectively wicking moisture away — but without shedding microplastics. It can even biodegrade at the end of its lifetime!

Bamboo grows quickly, is regenerative, and requires little to no fertilizer or extra water. This makes it one of the most sustainable materials out of which to make clothing.

And the fabric it’s spun into has a fantastic mix of the benefits of both natural and synthetic fibers. Ideal for hot sleepers or folks going through menopause, it’s more moisture-wicking than cotton or linen, pulling sweat away from your body and drying quickly. It’s breathable and has an almost microfiber-like cozy feel, too.

How are bamboo pajamas made?

To make the fabric that goes into bamboo PJs, bamboo is treated with a chemical solvent that breaks it down into fine cellulose fibers, which can then be spun into viscose/rayon. Ethically produced bamboo viscose/rayon can be made in a closed loop fashion, meaning all solvents used break back down into usable (not waste) ingredients.

What are the relevant certifications?

The certifications we see most often with bamboo pajamas are OEKO-TEX Standard 100, meaning the finished product has been tested for 100 of the most common toxic chemicals, and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), meaning the bamboo was grown organically (no harmful pesticides). Some of the companies below are also B Corps, meaning they meet some of the world’s most rigorous standards for ethical manufacturing and business practices.

How to take care of your bamboo pajamas:

One of the best parts about bamboo fabric: It can be machine washed! We recommend washing them in cold or cool water on a gentle cycle with gentle detergent and no bleach or fabric softener. You can also put bamboo pajamas in the dryer — just make sure you use a cool or gentle setting and remove them promptly.

Our criteria:

Our editors have spent the last decade wearing and researching sustainable clothing, including the most breathable, comfortable pajamas out there. For this guide, we’ve selected our favorite bamboo PJs that are thoughtfully made, size-inclusive, and affordable, too. We regularly update this list with emerging brands that meet the following criteria:

  • SIZE-INCLUSIVE | The brands on this list carry a large range of sizes so you can find the right fit for you.
  • SUSTAINABLE/NONTOXIC | All of the brands on this list use sustainable sourcing and manufacturing to ensure your purchase is low-impact. We’ve also prioritized brands that use certified organic, natural, and recycled materials that are never treated with harsh chemicals so they’re safe for you and the earth.
  • AFFORDABLE | Bamboo can be expensive since it’s labor-intensive to produce, especially when taking sustainability into account. We’ve included some options on this list that are a lower price point for smaller budgets.
