Our editors have researched and worn dozens of sustainable jewelry brands throughout the years — these are our favorites for pearl earrings that are thoughtfully sourced with high quality materials, at a variety of price points.
Nothing says “classic” like pearls. Whether it’s a string of pearls worn around your neck, a pearl pendant dangling from a chain, or pearl studs in your ears, the organic gemstones are probably the most elegant touch you can add to any look.
And today, we’re in a bit of a pearl renaissance. Since naturally occurring pearls are exceedingly rare, and pearl farming is a thriving industry, most of our pearls are farmed, or cultured. And as far as gemstones go, pearls aren’t too expensive. The jewelry they make comes in all shapes, sizes, and styles, from understated, delicate pieces to chunky statements. These aren’t your grandmother’s pearl earrings.
Why should you consider sustainable jewelry?
When shopping for clothes or accessories, we’re always conscious of being as minimally impactful on the environment — this means consuming thoughtfully, and therefore less. And when it comes to jewelry, we like to prioritize sustainability — recycled materials, handmade goods — so we can ensure our collections are mindful and will last a lifetime.
What are the different kinds of pearls?
Not all pearls are created equal. Well, they’re all somewhat equal. They’re all produced when an irritant, like a grain of sand or a bit of shell, gets inside a mollusk, like an oyster, mussel, or clam. The mollusk then slowly covers the irritant in a substance called nacre, which, after a few years of layering and layering, becomes a pearl.
While pearls can be found in the wild, they’re super rare and therefore super expensive. Pretty much all pearls you’ll find on the market today are cultivated. Farmers introduce an irritant to a clam or mussel, place it back in the water, wait for 2 to 5 years — and finally, a pearl!
Freshwater pearls come from mussels farmed in rivers and lakes, and they’re the most common type of pearl you’ll see on the market. Saltwater pearls come from oysters, and, while they’re also cultivated, are rarer and have a shinier luster. Akoya pearls are a type of saltwater pearl — they come from the akoya oyster and are known for their perfect spherical shape. Baroque pearls refer to those with an asymmetrical shape.
How do you know that your pearl jewelry is sustainable?
Since almost all pearls are cultured, they all come from a place of sustainability since pearl farms protect the lives of mollusks, contributing to thriving mollusk populations free of harmful chemicals. The more transparent a jewelry company is about its souring, the more ethical its suppliers likely are. Plus, some mollusk species can help filter polluted water — a net benefit for the environment.
How to take care of sustainable pearl earrings:
Pearls are durable, but you should avoid banging them up or submerging them in water. Wipe them with a soft cloth every so often to remove any skin oils, and avoid getting perfume or moisturizer on them. But it’s fine to keep them in the bathroom while you’re showering — they need a bit of moisture!
