Our team has outfitted our kids in organic clothing brands for years — these are our top selections for health, comfort, and durability across a range of price points.

As a parent, staying on top of my growing, active kid’s clothing needs can be a challenge. I have to be sure that everything she has will fit (which means having multiple sizes of favorite styles — growth spurts truly do seem to happen overnight!), that everything made well enough to endure a full day of heavy play, and meet all the requirements for school, the weather… and my child’s very exacting tastes. My daughter also has type 1 diabetes, so I’m looking for clothing that will accomodate her tech too.

As if that wasn’t enough, I’m also increasingly concerned about her exposure to microplastics, so all the poly-blends that so many kids clothes seem to be made of are out. My favorite material for durability and feel? Organic cotton, every time.

Cotton is one of the most controversial crops in the world, yet it’s also one of the most widely available fabrics for children’s apparel. This leaves us wondering about how best to source organic cotton for our children’s clothes when affordable and available.

Why consider organic clothes for your toddlers and kids?

Free of harsh chemicals, waxes, and formaldehyde, organic cotton is softer and gentler on sensitive skin — which is ideal for toddlers and children. There is also less risk of a potential allergic reaction with natural and safer materials like organic cotton. It requires fewer resources to produce and decomposes naturally in less time than its conventional counterparts. Since conventional cotton is grown with chemicals that can be harsh on its fibers, organic cotton clothing tends to be more durable, meaning it will last longer and is less likely to wear and tear over time.

Our criteria

Our editors have personally tested dozens of organic children’s clothing brands with our families, researched and corresponded with brands, and scoured thousands of customer reviews to choose our top picks. My daughter wore these clothes for several weeks, testing them in various weather conditions and during full days of schools and tons of activity. She is extremely opinionated, and these items were her absolute favorites! Here is what we had in mind as we tested (note that we continually update this list with emerging favorites that meet our criteria!):

  • NONTOXIC | These organic kids clothes are crafted with health and safety in mind — including no harsh synthetics, chemicals, or dyes.
  • COMFORT | We all want our children to be as comfortable as possible in their garments. These sustainable clothing brands are functional and made with soft fabrics that’ll feel comfy all day.
  • DURABILITY | Kids’ clothes tend to wear out easily with all the activities they go through in a day. We’ve ensured these kids clothing brands can withstand tons of wears and washes with ease.
  • ETHICS | Each of these kids clothing brands upholds high-standard ethical and responsible production practices.

Here are a few of our favorite children’s apparel brands boasting clean and organic cotton for the littlest members of your family (recommended personally from a 5-year-old TGT contributing editor!).

My 5-year-old daughter put these 9 brands to the test and they all passed with flying colors (our dog Theo wants us to note he was also a fan, that’s just how his face looks).

1. Colored Organics

Fair trade
GOTS certified
Woman owned

Best For | Organic cotton essentials
Size Range | 0M–6Y
Price | $20–$66

We love Colored Organics for its affordable, classic apparel. The tees, sweaters, and leggings come in earthy and neutral colors, and are made from 100 percent organic cotton. They’re colored with water-based dyes, too, so no chemical dyes will irritate sensitive skin. Every purchase from the collection helps a child in need, so if you’re looking for a brand that gives back, you’ve found it.

Editor Review | “Sometimes it can be hard to find the sweet spot of clothing that both parent and child think is cute, but Colored Organics topped both of our lists, no question! Not only are their styles beautiful, but the material was extremely soft, like a favorite t-shirt that had been washed exactly the magic number of times that makes it feel so good. The little details like the buttons on the back of the shirts elevated even simple looks, which my little fashionista especially appreciated.”

2. Hanna Andersson

GOTS certified
OEKO-TEX® certified
Recycled materials

Best For | Brightly colored patterns
Size Range | NB-14Y
Price | $28–$78

Hanna Andersson is a favorite for any family that loves bold designs in premium, organic fabrics that are made to last. We especially love the way they incorporate kids’ favorite characters into prints and patterns that are actually cute. From swimwear to matching family pajamas, the Swedish company has been committed to sustainable and fair trade practices for the last forty years, and continues to raise the bar on its own standards (the brand is currently piloting regenerative farming practices with its suppliers, and every year they increase the percentage of recycled materials into their clothing). They also have a pre-loved shop where you can enjoy — how cute is this? — Hanna-Me-Downs at a discounted price!

Editor Review | “We have been longtime Hanna fans, though we usually traffic in the bright and cheery jammies. The clementine swimsuit and tomato dress became instant favorites, not only for their happy, colorful prints but also their fit and feel. My daughter loves to spin in the dress, which has a satisfying circle cut and fans out in a big twirl without any of the weight and heaviness that usually make such a thing possible. The swimsuit is soft and stretchy but very durable — she has worn it already more than a dozen times and it hasn’t faded at all from the chlorine or wash.”

3. Quince

Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Plastic/Pfas free

Best For | Staple wardrobe pieces
Size Range | NB–12Y
Price | $20–$110

For elevated kids clothes at affordable prices, Quince is our top choice. You won’t just find 100% organic cotton pieces here, but also ethically sourced cashmere, silk, and more (and it’s all washable!). Quince uses OEKO-TEX certified organic cotton in a variety of fabrics and blends, like jersey and twill throughout their stylish kids apparel. The brand even keeps its prices low through their transparent pricing model where they purchase and sell directly from the source, rather than working with distributors. We recommend their cotton t-shirt packs, where you’ll save nearly 52% off traditional retail prices for thick and soft basics!

Editor Review | “Prior to this experience, my child didn’t know that sweaters could be so soft. I’m afraid there’s no going back after Quince. Even in 80 degree weather, she insisted on wearing one to school because she wanted to show it off (she also promised me it was cold in the classroom). The skirt was an instant favorite for obvious reasons (shiny, silky) and the bike shorts also get worn nearly daily for their comfort and functionality — when you have an autoimmune disease that you manage through an app on your phone, side pockets are clutch. I know not everyone will have a child with a phone, but for those of us that have to keep one for medical safety (you should see the judgment we get!), it’s nice to have clothing that offers a discrete way to hold on to it.”

4. Burt’s Bees Baby

Budget friendly
GOTS certified
Recycled materials

Best For | Matching pajamas
Size Range | NB–12Y
Price | $18–$32

Readily available online and through third-party retailers, Burt’s Bees Baby’s toddler and kids collection is full of boldly printed pajamas that are made from 100 percent GOTS Certified organic cotton. Don’t be fooled by the name: Sizes range from newborn to 12, and they even offer select collections for the whole family! The pieces are soft, durable, and breathable, so you can rest assured — literally — that your child is getting a good night’s rest and that their apparel will last, well, until they grow out of it.

Editor Review | “Nearly all of my daughter’s favorite jammies over the years have been from Burt’s, so these sets were greeted as old friends. Soft, comfy, and cute enough to wear to school, we’ve already lost them to the rotation of her heavy-wear favorites that never seem to make it to the dresser because they are the first thing worn from the wash and the first to go back into the hamper.”

5. Nui

FSC
GOTS certified
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Recycled materials
Woman owned

Best For | Matching sets
Size Range | NB–12Y
Price | $24–$28

When a classic, comfy wardrobe is in order, we’re looking to Nui. We love their timeless and monochromatic collection of kids t-shirts, leggings, shorts, and more. The pieces are simple, well-made, and are crafted with GOTS and OEKO-TEX certified cotton that’s free of harsh chemicals. Nui is also committed to working with ethical factory partners in Lithuania, Bulgaria, and India. And if you’re looking to expand your child’s clothing beyond cotton, you can also find sustainably sourced merino, merino Tencel, and lambskin clothing, too.

Editor Review | “These have become a favorite lounge set fast, for their cozy, lightweight feel and their sophisticated look. We’ve both wished they came in my size multiple times so we could match! Now, my daughter wants a set in every color.”

6. Kate Quinn

Budget friendly
Natural materials
Woman owned

Best For | Bundles & sets
Size Range | NB–14Y
Price | $9–$84

Kate Quinn‘s collections for babies and kids are luxurious, soft, sustainable, and beautiful at price points that won’t break the bank. Since discontinuing their wholesale practices and focusing entirely on their online storefront, the brand has been able to cut down markups and sell their supremely soft, functional kids clothing at affordable prices. Choose from organic cotton, bamboo, or lenzing modal (a bio-based fabric made from beech tree cellulose) in unique prints like Sunset 60’s Daisy or Black Vintage Motorcycle.

Editor Review | “I’ve had this brand on my wishlist for years so I was so excited to get my hands on a set of their beautiful, soft, versatile pieces! It was like recieving a mini capsule wardrobe, and I could imagine how easy it would be to take a bundle like this on a weekend trip for a quick and easy packing job. The dresses have natural prints on them that make my daughter feel like “a fairy that lives in the woods in a bunny burrow,” and she loves the fluttery sleeves and buttons down the backs. The shirt and shorts are ultra soft and very lightweight, so I know we’ll be rotating them regulaly as the temps climb all summer.”

7. Boden

Budget friendly
Fair trade
Natural materials
Recycled materials

Best For | Colorful daily wear
Size Range | 12M–14Y
Price | $16–$149

TGT fave Boden makes our lists for adult apparel time and time again, so we aren’t snoozing on their kid’s collections! With the same bold, colorful designs we love so much in their women’s dresses and swimsuits, their children’s tops, bottoms, outerwear, dresses, swimsuits, jammies, and accessories are just plain fun! The brand is always pushing its own sustainability goals, and recently became carbon neutral two full years before their target. Love that!

Editor Review | “This Boden dress is the perfect mix of comfortable for daily where and gorgeous enough for a special occasion. The cotton is not stretchy, so it has a sturdier structure than most of the dresses in my daughter’s closet — and she seems to love that! It looks the same whether it’s filthy or straight out of the wash, and the details like the button front and side pockets are favorite features. There is some smocking on the back that gives a little, so hopefully we can make this one last for a few years!”

8. Mightly

Fair trade
GOTS certified
Woman owned

Best For | Colorful graphic tees
Size Range | 2T–14Y
Price | $16–$48

Mightly is a Fair Trade Certified brand making kids’ active wear from GOTS certified organic cotton. Their bright, playful tops and bottoms are as durable as they are fun, with designs from independent artists in addition to their classic patterns and colorful solids. The women-owned company was created by moms with experience in the apparel industry who wanted to make comfortable, organic clothes that could withstand a full day of play with active kids. Sounds like a winner to us!

Editor Review | “At first, my daughter thought these were too plain, but the skater dress style in particular won her over almost immediately. It has an even bigger twirl range of motion than the Hanna dress! The t-shirt is extremely well made, and survived a field day and a nature hike in full sun without fading in the wash or tearing from the various tumbles my child put it through.”

9. Jackalo

1% for the planet
Fair trade
Family owned
GOTS certified

Best For | Durable organic kids clothes
Size Range | 2Y–14Y
Price | $40–$178

If your kids are hard on their clothes or seem to grow out of new outfits before they even get a chance to wear them, may we introduce you to Jackalo! The organic clothing company creates well-made, versatile basics designed specifically for kids who take their play seriously. With reinforced knees on their best-selling pants, you won’t have to worry about those instant holes that come with the first wear! In fact, if any Jackalo pants rip within six months of purchase, the brand will repair them free of charge. Combined with their ethical practices, eco-friendly production, and sustainable materials, we’re keeping this shop on our radar.

Editor Review | “My daughter was super skeptical about these pants from Jackalo (her exact words were ‘Mom, I don’t really do hard pants…’) but within a few minutes of wearing them she was sold. ‘I love that I can put my insulin pump in the pocket and it stays there,’ she said. She also put pencils, rocks, and stickers in the pockets with similarly favorable results. They are a bit long, but the waist is stretchy and after we rolled up the bottoms they got a double thumbs up. The shirt is soft and versatile, and she’s gone back to it multiple times when she needs something simple to go with one of her more ‘showstopper’ pieces (aka one of the many tutus she loves…). I love how well-made these pieces are, and I know we will wear them until the very last moment she can fit into them!”
